Lighthouses
Part 1, Lick & Stick
Designer: Sean Pethick - Printer: McPherson's Printing
This issue celebrates Lighthouses, they have been in use around the world for over three thousand years, Australia's lighthouses began with the Colonies building their own as required and when funds were available, in 1915 the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service began, with 179 marine marks, including 104 manned stations, today we have approximately 400 light stations around Australia, they are all automated, all Lighthouses within Australia are heritage listed and mostly serve as tourist attractions, but lighthouses live on in many peoples minds straying into a world of adventure, automation began in Australia about 1913, the four designs are: 45c Macquarie, New South Wales, this was Australia's first navigational light, an navigation aide has been on the Sydney South Head since 1794, but the lighthouse was not built until 1818 and then rebuilt to the original design when the sandstone deteriorated, it was automated in 1976; 49c Cape Naturaliste, Western Australia, CSR Palmer oversaw the design of this lighthouse, it was set 123 metres above high water and is 20 metres in height, it has a 4.6 metre diameter light which was manufactured by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, England, the light was automated in 1978 then demanned in 1996; 49c Troubridge Island, South Australia, this was the second lighthouse to be constructed in South Australia, it was designed and built by a British firm headed by Alexander Gordon, it was completed in 1855 and was the first prefabricated cast Iron lighthouse built in Australia, being built in segments made in England and bolted together on site, during the 70's a new lighthouse was constructed onsite, then in 1981 it was fully automated and demanned; $1.50 Cape Bruny, Tasmania, this lighthouse was designed by Lee Archer and built by convict labour, using stone cut from the site, the tower was 13 metres in height and was completed in 1838, a cast iron staircase was added in 1903, the lighthouse was replaced in 1996 by an automated solar light station on the adjacent headland.   A $9.95 collectors book was also released

Australia - France Joint Issue
Flinders - Baudin Bicentenary
Domestic & International
Designers: Brian Sadgrove (Australia) Michel Bez (France) - Printer: SNP Ausprint
Artists:
Charles-Alexandre Leueur (1778-1846) a gunner that Baudin recruited for his artistic talents.
Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) Sir Joseph Banks recruited Bauer for the Investigator expedition in 1801.
This issue celebrates the Bicentenary of the meeting of these two explorers at Encounter Bay, near the South Australian Coast, on the 8th April 1802, although France & England were at war with each other at the time, these ships met as they carried safe conducts from both sides, so the encounter was by two explorers not two warring nations, between 1801 & 1803 these two explorers filled in most of the gaps in the current maps of New Holland (as Australia was known) at the time.
Sailing east on 8 April 1802, Finders on board the 'Investigator' sighted the French ship, the 'Geographe', sailing west, Flinders, with naturalist Robert Brown (acting as his interpreter) boarded the 'Geographe' and the two commanders exchanged information, Flinders named their meeting place Encounter Bay, they met again the following day with Baudin then continuing on west before returning to southern Van Dieman's Land, while Flinders sailed via King Island to a large bay he named Port Phillip, months later they again met at Port Jackson.
Baudin's voyage (the fifth by French explorers in Australian waters), produced the first comprehensive pictorial record of the shores & waters of the continent, his expedition also supplied the first comprehensive account of the indigenous people of Tasmania, along with drawings & paintings of the coastal regions, birds, animals & marine creatures.
Flinders achievements were also many, he was the first explorer to circumnavigate the continent, his maps were so detailed they were still in use almost two hundred years later, he was also the first cartographer to use the name 'Australia' for this continent.
The 45c stamp features a portrait of Nicolas Baudin, a painting of a Kangaroo by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, the French map of Encounter Bay, the "Geographe' (taken from the expedition letterhead) & Baudin's signature.
The $1.50 stamp features a portrait of Matthew Flinders, a painting of the Port Lincoln Parrot (called the Australian Ringneck) by Ferdinand Bauer, Flinders map of Australia, the 'Investigator' & 'Geographe' against a map of Australia showing the routes of the two ships.
The 45c Gutter strips show five different images in the strip, Flinder's & Baudin's  signatures, drawings of both ships, and the two flags (Australia & France) together, the .50 Gutter Strip is blank.
