Colonel William Light arrived on the Southern Coast to survey the area in May 1836, his recommendation (which was adopted) was to settle on the present site of Adelaide,the settlement was never a penal colony and convicts were never permitted to settle anywhere in the State, South Australia (with an area of over 98,000,000 hectacres) achieved responsible Government in 1855, 46 years later (in 1901) with the other States South Australia became a member of the Commonwealth of Australia.
The first South Australian postage stamps were issued on 1 January, 1855.
