New South Wales Issues
By Year of Release - Still Under Construction
In 1770 New South Wales was discovered and named by Lieutenant James Cook, eighteen years later at Port Jackson, a penal colony was settled under the direction of Captain Arthur Phillip, with New South Wales remaining a penal colony until 1840.
New South Wales was the entire colony until 1803 at which time, the Van Dieman's Land (later known as Tasmania) penal colony was first settled on the Derwent River in 1825, but, this settlement was still under the control of New South Wales, then in 1824 another penal colony was settled at Moreton Bay (later named Brisbane, this area separated and was named Queensland in 1859) before that  time the entire eastern seaboard was still known as New South Wales.
Western Australia was settled at King George's Sound in 1827, then on the Swan River two years later, it became a penal colony in 1849, in 1835 after a number of failed attempts at settlement, John Bateman began a settlement in the Port Phillip area (what was to become Victoria), again this area was still known as New South Wales, (until 1856, when Victoria was proclaimed and became a separate colony), in 1836 Colonel William Light  arrived and surveyed South Australia, with a settlement being started at the site of Adelaide (this site, in fact this State was never a penal colony and convicts were not permitted to settle within the state).
The first postal stamps were issued in New South Wales on the 1st January, 1850, in 1856 Responsible Government was achieved, then in 1901, New South Wales became a member of the Commonwealth of Australia, after Federation.
I have listed these issues as close to what I think is the basic and easiest way to list them, but I am open to corrections and information.

1850 (first issued 1 January)

These stamps were called Sydney Views, due to their design being based on the Great Seal of New South Wales, granted in 1790, the design depicted or referred to industry and all her many attributes, it carried the motto "Sic fortis Etruria crevit" (Thus the mighty Etruria grew) quoted from Virgil, the three original plates had three different engravers, the 1d by Robert Clayton; the 2d by John Carmichael and the 3d by H.C. Jervis, all three plates were engraved a number of times, generating a vast number of different shades and designs, with the first printing being on a very primitive hand press by Charles Kay.
