Part 1, Lick & Stick
Designer: Symone Lambert, Australia Post Design Studio - Printer: SEP Sprint
There are two stamps in this issue, the 50c The Ashes reclaimed & the $1.85 Players with replica Ashes Urn. The Ashes came into being in 1882, when a group of women (one of whom, Florence Morphy, later married the English Captain) presented the English Captain, Ivo Bligh with a small urn of Ashes, containing either the balls or the bails from the game, Bligh returned to English with the urn, two years after Ivo's death in 1927, Dame Florence Bligh presented the same Urn & Ashes to the Marlyebone Cricket Club (M.C.C.), England's premier cricket club at the time, the Urn (being in a fragile state) is held in the M.C.C. museum, with a crystal trophy being presented to the winners. Over the last 124 years Australia has been victorious on 30 occasions and England on 27. This year has seen the retirement of a number of cricket hero's, with Shane Warne, Glen McGrath, Justin Langer & Damian Martyn leaving test cricket. The miniature sheet listed below was also overprinted three times that I am aware, twice for the 54th Annual Victorian Philatelic Congress on Sunday 9 December 2007 and once for the APTA Stamp, Coin & Collectables Fair, 8-9 February 2007of times.

This issue again celebrates Her Majesties birthday, the image shown was taken while on tour here in Australia during the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The first stamp issued in Australia to celebrate our Queen's birthday was on 21 April 1980, followed by 1981, then every year until 2002 when Her Majesties jubilee year of accession stamp was issued, the following year 2003, the Golden Jubilee of Coronation was issued, in 2004 a further commemorative stamp was issued celebrating the Queen's golden jubilee of Her 1954 tour, although this stamp was also celebrating her birthday, the following year saw the return to issuing birthday stamps each year for our Queen.

Historic Shipwrecks
Illustrator: Iain MacKellar, Sydney - Designer: Sally Piskuric, Australia Post Design Studio - Printer: SEP Sprint
This issue of three stamps covers the 50c Admella, the $1 Loch Ard and the $2 Dunbar shipwrecks, as an island continent Australia could only be reached at one time by sea, this created many shipwrecks over the years through one source or another from the 17th century to present day, the National Shipwrecks Database lists 7.303 wrecks around our coastline, the three listed above were some of the worst for loss of life and remarkable survival during the 19th century; the Admella was built in Glasgow, she struck a reef as it sailed from Adelaide, South Australia to Melbourne, Victoria, striking a reef on the south-eastern coastline of South Australia on 6 August 1859, breaking up within 15 minutes, only 24 people survived of 113 souls; the Loch Ard was also built in Glasgow in 1873, she carried passengers to Australia and wool on the return journey, she struck Mutton Bird Island in what is known as Shipwreck Coast in Bass Straight during her third voyage on 1 June 1878, sinking quickly, lone crewman Tom Pearce believed he was the sole survivor until he heard the cries of Eva Carmichael, whom he saved, he then scaled the gorge and raised the alarm 49 souls were lost; the Dunbar was Sydney's worst maritime tragedy, she was launched in 1854, leaving Plymouth in the UK on 31 May 1857, she sailed for Sydney carrying passengers, as she approached her destination on 20 August, the conditions were very poor, visibility being a major contributor to the accident, Captain Green headed toward what he considered to be the entrance to Port Jackson, it was in fact the cliff-face where the Macquarie Lighthouse stood on South Head, crewman James Johnson was the only survivor clinging to the rock face after being thrown onto the rocks by the wild surf, he remained there for 36 hours until hauled 60 metres up the cliff-face to safety, 120 souls were lost.

Landmarks: Australian Modern Architecture
Designer: Gary Domoney, Spark Studio - Printer: SEP Sprint
Modern architects followed the adage 'Form follows Function' in the early 20th century, modernism changed and challenged many of the designs and ideals that were once held, with the onset of technological advancements and the machine age the designs advanced to allow much greater flexibility in materials, reducing size but increasing strength of materials used allowing for greater flexibility and innovation in the type of designs able to be produced. The four stamps listed are perfect examples of all the changes they are: 50c Former I.C.I.
